MediG’s primary role is to provide medical care in a hospital. This team of providers include a physician, a nurse practitioner and physician assistant who work closely with bedside nurses, social workers, physical therapists and other staff to provide thoughtful, safe, collaborative medical care that includes 24-hour care of general medical patients, as well as consultative services for patients who require surgery.
We work in Rosepark hospital in Bloemfontein: this well-known institution is a member of Life Healthcare, recognised throughout the health industry for its high calibre healthcare professionals and excellent facilities, which include:
- Oncology, medical, children and general surgery wards, with a total of 235 beds and 10 theatres, of which six have laminar flow
- An endoscope unit (MediG is trained in colonoscopy, gastroscopy and bronchoscopy)
- An 11 bed general intensive care unit, equipped with leading diagnostic and monitoring facilities. Our office has a specific interest in Intensive Care and High Risk medicine
- A 8 bed neurosurgery ICU
- A 4 bed neurosurgery high care unit
- A 24-hour accident & emergency unit manned by a multi-disciplinary team trained to handle any emergency situation, with the latest medical technology at their disposal
- Cardio unit including a cardio ICU, cardio ward and catheterisation lab
An internist or internal medicine physician like Dr Gibson is a primary and tertiary care doctor who primarily sees patients in an office-based setting, in addition to rounding on patients in the hospital. Traditional internists may be overloaded with balancing an office based practice with the on-call hospital schedule of rounding on patients in the hospital, which is easily solved by taking fewer patients, and do more for each. Collectively, our goal is to combine the latest evidence-based medicine with thoughtful consideration of each patient’s needs to foster wellness and healing.
Added to normal clinical medicine, Medig works with local clinical technology services, and is thus a provider for electro-cardiography (resting and with exercise); a whole array of echo and diagnostic sonography (ultrasonography) examinations (like Doppler of the cerebral vasculature; venous studies; cardiac ultrasonography and evaluation; and a range of arterial vasculature examinations). We can also do pulmonary function tests and spirometry; segmental vascular pressure measurements; ambulatory blood pressure and ECG recording; thyroid echo-studies; sleep studies and polysomnography, as well as follow-up Positive end-expiratory pressure titration.
Internists are referred to as the “doctor’s doctor,” because they are often called upon to act as consultants to other physicians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problems. They are specially trained to solve these diagnostic questions, and can handle severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time. They also bring to patients an understanding of wellness (disease prevention and the promotion of health). Internists are especially skilled in the management of patients who have undifferentiated or multi-system disease processes. Internists care for hospitalized and ambulatory patients: our goal is leadership in patient care, and we have clinical expertise in internal medicine (including primary care and consultative medicine), hospital medicine (including inpatient and preoperative consultation), executive health, and preventive medicine.
Our office is an ambulatory care clinic (derived from the Greek klinein to slope, lean or recline. Hence kline is a couch or bed, klinikos is sloping or reclining and in Latin clinicus. MediG serves as a health care facility that is primarily devoted to the care of patients. MediG is privately operated and funded, and typically cover the primary health care needs of populations in the local communities. The term internal medicine originates from the German term innere medizin, popularized in Germany in the late 19th century to describe physicians who combined the science of the laboratory with the care of patients. The name “inter-medicine” was adopted in imitation of the existing German term.
In today’s complex medical environment, MediG takes pride in caring for their patients for life – in the office or clinic, during hospitalization and intensive care, and even at home. Always applying health through the art of medicine, not through the business of medicine.
The mission of this office is to provide better care of the sick, investigate their problems, and further educate those who stay with them. Throughout this we must
- excel in specialized medical care, and have
- the best qualified medical, scientific and support staff.
This MediG does by maintaining the highest standards, and achieve them by continually measuring and improving our outcomes. We welcome change, encourage invention and continually seek better, more efficient ways to achieve our goals.
